Phoenix Institute of Victoria

The Phoenix Institute of Victoria Pty Ltd is an innovative private education provider has been delivering a range of stimulating programs and vocational Diplomas in transpersonal counselling and art therapy for the last 10 years . Since 1998, over 1000 students have been involved in Phoenix programs with an ever growing network of people keenly interested in furthering their professional and vocational education in these specialist psycho-spiritual modalities. Over 400 students have graduated with Diplomas from the Institute, many of whom are now actively working in the community. Currently Phoenix has over 200 students in its Diploma courses, including international students.

Phoenix is aspiring to become a world class “arts based” education provider for counselling and therapy in the areas of visual art, music, movement and holistic and transpersonal modalities. In particular, Phoenix is undertaking further research and development to provide professional psycho-spiritual approaches to well being and management of mental and spiritual health. Added to this, Phoenix aspires to combine both, scientific disciplines with traditional Eastern and indigenous models of health.

At Phoenix students are fully involved in their learning. The philosophy is “learning in the doing”, so there are many group activities and community building processes in the programs. Students are able to explore and discover their own potentials and resources as counsellors and therapists in a supportive and creative environment. The Diploma courses involve the student in gaining new skills and ideas that apply both to themselves and to their future clients. Students learn to explore the spectrum of consciousness and how it applies to their own lives and experience. It is a challenging and exciting work, as students learn to widen their lens in terms of how they see themselves and the world around them. Students often access their own personal vision and gain confidence to live it.

The majority of Phoenix’s students are mature age and most have professional experience and/or tertiary qualifications when they enroll.

Phoenix History

In 2005, Phoenix became a Registered Training Organization (RTO No. 21582). It delivers Government accredited Diploma courses under the National Training Information Service (NTIS). Phoenix is accredited to deliver the Diploma of Transpersonal Art Therapy (51939) and the Diploma of Transpersonal Counselling (51942) and until 2008 a Diploma of Holistic Counselling Practice. Phoenix Diplomas are nationally recognised by the following professional associations: Australian Counselling Association (ACA), International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT) and the Australian Association of Holistic and Transpersonal Counsellors (AAHTC). Once graduated, Phoenix students can qualify for professional indemnity insurance from the ACA, IICT and AAHTC.

The Diploma of Transpersonal Counselling and the Diploma of Transpersonal Art Therapy were initially developed by Dr Rafael Locke who spent many years developing courses that provide a unique understanding and skills for people wanting to train as psycho-spiritual counsellors and art therapists. Since Dr Locke's pioneering work, Institutes and Colleges across Australia (Victoria, NSW, SA and more recently QLD) are delivering these courses. The Phoenix Institute shares the intellectual property with Dr Locke and is involved in its further research and development

Professional Development

Phoenix also provides professional development opportunities through its workshops, talks, seminars and counselling supervision programs. These provide a valuable service for people interested in spirituality, personal development and for professionals and those interested in psycho-spiritual education, art therapy and further training.

Future Developments

The demand for further education in these modalities by graduates and others has prompted Phoenix to recently apply for a Higher Education Registration to deliver a Bachelor Degree in Holistic Counselling. In addition, Phoenix has been attracting well-qualified and experienced academic staff who wish to be involved in these new therapeutic modalities.
